Palmate newt (Lissotriton helveticus) in a lochan on Druim Fada. We called this lochan the fish-loch, but the movement we saw was not that of small fish, but of palmate newts and caddisfly-larvae (below-left). In winter, a lochan like this is always frozen solid, but that does not harm them. The newts here are often almost black.
